CAR WASH by D.J. Martin

After early Sunday morning worship services, I often pass by a car wash full of people. During a Sunday afternoon conversation, I thought I had an audience of agreeable ‘mature’ Christians with whom I could express my dismay. However, one of the ministers gently challenged me. Admittedly, I couldn’t justify my rebuke of that practice. I had no religious or biblical premise to validate my complaint. I deemed it sacrilegious. In my unwritten book of rules, washing cars was something you didn’t do on Sunday. Nevertheless, after listening to the minister, I became aware of my religious and judgmental attitude. It was offensive to me, but I couldn’t biblically argue that it was offensive to God.

I realized that my perspective was limited and shaped by my own personal beliefs and traditions. This experience taught me the importance of humility and open-mindedness when it comes to understanding and interpreting religious practices. It challenged me to reevaluate the basis of my convictions and to approach differences in religious observance with empathy and understanding. Ultimately, it encouraged me to engage in meaningful dialogue with others, even when our perspectives may initially seem at odds. This encounter served as a powerful reminder of the complexities of human interpretation and the need for compassion in navigating theological differences.

I remember, one Sunday morning my brother was singing a secular song and I responded, “This is the Sabbath, keep it holy.”  Much like a hypocritical Pharisee (Luke 13:15), I had a ridiculous, unwritten list of things people should never do on a Sunday: don’t iron, wash cars, sing or listen to secular songs…

With all the commandments that the Pharisees observed, keeping the Sabbath was the one charge (John 5:16) they relentless made against Jesus. Oh my, they were so outraged when His disciples took corn from the stalk to eat on the Sabbath (Luke 6:1-2)! Observing the Sabbath became their measuring rod and premise of justification for accepting or denying the legitimacy of Jesus Christ.

On one Sabbath, Jesus went to the synagogue when a man with a withered hand was there. The Pharisees, intending to accuse Jesus, asked Him if it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:10). Jesus’ reply posed a better question, “Is it lawful to ‘do good’ on the Sabbath (Mark 3:4)?” Then He commanded the man to stretch out his hand, and when he did, his withered hand was whole. I imagine they couldn’t charge Jesus with working on the Sabbath, because they couldn’t prove whether He healed the man or if God in heaven did.

Jesus, full of compassion (Matthew 14:14), often healed and performed miracles on the Sabbath. I’m sure that, to the people, any day was a good day to receive healing.

Since His resurrection, most Christians celebrate Sunday as their Sabbath. Jesus set the captives free and broke chains with His death, burial, and resurrection. He got up with all power in His hand and set us free from rules and bondage (Galatians 4:4-5, Isaiah 61:1). Therefore, we are free to worship and free to revere our relationship with the Father more than observing a day. However, like the religious Jews, some denominations, pastors, and elders have adopted a set of rules and regulations to place next to the Bible. They bemoan cults, but the only difference between them and cults is that cults are strict enforcers, overtly controlling enslavers, and disproportionately worshipers of religious rules and regulations more than worshippers of God.

Paul scolded the religious Jews because they were insisting that the Gentiles observe Jewish rules or traditions that require circumcision and avoidance of certain foods. Paul explained to them that it was heartfelt faith in Christ not traditions and laws that was the determination of their relationship in the family of God (Galatians 4 & 5).

The Pharisees also judged the disciples by the washing of hands. How about you? Do you or your church have a rule or measuring rod by which you justify one’s piety or Christianity? Do they measure up to your religious standards? Is it how they comb their hair, the way they dress; such as wearing jeans while preaching on a Sunday morning, tattoos on their body, or a man wearing earrings? Is it what they eat or who they dine with? Is it their non-religious interpretation of the Word or their non-religious speech? Is it that they prophesy, heal, or speak in tongues during Sunday Morning service? Here’s one; is it that they are naked hanging on the cross, next to Jesus, publicly confessing their sins and welcomed by Jesus into His kingdom?

It’s not by outward appearance, but by the heart that God judges.

Which ingratiates you to God: wearing a white suit, pure white ankle length dresses, white head covering, and lily-white gloves on a Sunday or a clean heart? Admittedly, I have looked at people and what they do or wear, on a Sunday, which I wouldn’t do or wear, and questioned their thinking but never their relationship with God. How could I? Only God can see their heart.

Hmm. Wonder what God will reward more for; religiously obeying denominational rules on Sunday or faithfully pursuing a relationship with Him daily?

And He said unto them, “The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath…” Mark 2:27

PSALM 41:1-3 (KJV)

Blessed is he that considereth the poor:

1. …the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble.

2. The LORD will preserve him,

3. …and keep him alive;

4. …and he shall be blessed upon the earth:

5. …and Thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

6. The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing:

7. Thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

English: Fireworks on the first day of Summerf...

I hurried to try to make it, before the celebration was over, to hear a great gospel singer. However, when I got there, the singing was over and the fireworks was about to begin. So even though I missed her singing, I stayed around to enjoy the fireworks.

After finding ourselves in an untimely circumstance that appears to not work out the way we had planned, unfortunately we seem to have a habit of abruptly giving up and deciding that help is none existence or this is not the correct path. So we stop our journey and turn around to go home. Even when we are timely and there are no signs that help or the man of significance is not in front of our eyes, we end our pursuit and turn around to go home.

Sometimes it’s because we really don’t know what they look like or how they will be dressed or what stage they are on. Sometimes we aren’t in sync with their timing.

The wicked, however, will pursue their devious plans or the defeat of the righteous no matter how late they are. They most likely will say “We just missed them therefore let’s run faster.” But the religious tend to give up or even deny the existence of hope and victory or even deny the Author of hope and victory.

Just because you didn’t see Him, doesn’t mean that God wasn’t there. He’s omnipresent! We (the religious) will stay around to watch fireworks faster than we will stay around to see how God will come through. But, you won’t know if you stop your journey and turn around . If you decide not to stay around, you’ll miss the evidence of His Power and Glory performed!

Judas was one man who didn’t stick around. I don’t know if he expected Him to break chains and call down warring angels, but Judas was obviously disappointed about the defenseless state of Jesus Christ and His humility in the face of tremendous opposition. It didn’t work out the way Judas had planned. But, those who hung around and held tightly His Words to their bosoms; they saw His power and His Glory; they saw His triumphant and victory!

Whether we hang around or not, whether we decide to not believe in Him and walk away from Him, it will not change the fact that Jesus Christ was crucified for our transgressions and did rise from the grave, and is now sitting on the right hand of God the Father having all power in His Hand, making intercession for us; and soon one day, will come again to receive us to Himself and every knee will bow and every tongue (believers and non-believers) will confess, “Jesus Christ, Lord of Lords and King of Kings!”

I pray that this New Year,

  1. I will not be too quick to give up on the merciful and powerful intervention of God.
  2. I will be more diligent to take the time to actively pursue seeing His power and His glory in every situation to victory.
  3. I will vigorously pursue righteousness and seek a stronger relationship with Jesus Christ.
  4. I will chase a thousand and seek God’s kingdom agenda.

I pray that this New Year, all who I come in contact with will have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; and in our walk and our talk we will be quick to confess that Jesus Christ is real and indeed Lord of Lords and King of Kings!

Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. (KJV)” Psalm 27:14

Happy New Year!I believe that this is God’s resolve for us. I will let Him speak in His own Words…

He said unto them, Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith? Mark 4:40

They feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!” Mark 4:41

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. Proverbs 3:5

O LORD my God, in You do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and delivertrust me.  Psalm 7:1

Trust in Him at all times; [ye] people, pour out your heart before Him: God [is] a refuge for us.  Psalm 62:8

In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.  Psalm 56:11

I will say of the LORD, [He is] my refuge and my fortress: my God; in Him will I trust.  Psalm 91:2

We should not trust in ourselves, but in God, which raises the dead: 2 Corinthians 1:9

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not high-minded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. 1 Timothy 6:17

Trust in the LORD, and do good; [so] shalt you dwell in the land, and verily you shall be fed.  Psalm 37:3

Delight yourself also in the LORD; And He shall give you the desires of your heart.  Psalm 37:4

“Don’t put your confidence in powerful people, in mortal men; there is no help for you there. When they breathe their last, they return to the earth, and all their plans die with them.  Psalm 146:3-4

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God, He made heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them. He keeps every promise forever; Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The LORD gives freedom to the prisoners.  Psalm 146:5-7

The LORD opens the eyes of the blind; The LORD raises those who are bowed down; The LORD loves the righteous.  Psalm 146:8

The LORD watches over the strangers; He cares for the orphans and widows, but He frustrates the plans of the wicked.  Psalm 146:9

The LORD [is] my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, [and] my high tower. Psalm 18:2

I will call upon the LORD, [who is worthy] to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. Psalm 18:3

He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them, which hated me: for they were too strong for me Psalm 18:17

He delivers me from my enemies. You also lift me up above those who rise against me; You have delivered me from the violent man. Psalm 18:48

Commit your way to the LORD; Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass.  Psalm 37:5

Jesus answering said unto them, “Have faith in God.” Mark 11:22

Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. Mark 11:24

Truly, I know that it doesn’t look like there is any reasonable hope, but there is hope in God. You can approach the doorkeeper who clearly has the keys in his hand; and though he is a good friend of a friend; he cannot open the door.  I know this, because it has happened to me.  People tell you that it is not what you know but whom you know, but unless God says so, whom you know does not help you get a fingernail into the door.  People tell you, “I got your back,” but when the time of reckoning comes, there is only air at your back.  Let’s face it; human beings have the best of intentions, but from time to time, they will let you down. The only certainty is God! He never changes and He is able to do exceeding abundantly more than we can ask or think!

Are there those who have come against you and jealously actively pursue your defeat? God is our advocate and He can make our enemies our footstool. All the money in the world can’t guarantee our health or happiness. Let us not be so quick to devise our own plans without first seeking the counsel of God. In all we do and encounter, we should never fail to trust God! It is easier said than done, therefore, we have to consistently pray, read His Word and remind ourselves that He is a present and faithful help in time of trouble.

May we resolve to stop hoping in ineffective friends or perishable things. They can only help, if God allows and /or compels them to. Let us resolve to not panic and lose focus for fear of man and negative circumstances, but put our faith in God. Some say, “ if I had ‘X’ amount of money; “if I had a spouse”; “if we had a child”; “if I had those clothes”; or “if I only knew those people…” All those things can disappear at an instant. Government, people, riches, etc. will let you down.

Let us resolve, this New Year, to not trust in things or people for hope, health, freedom and victory, but Trust in God first instead of after trying all others who failed to help. May we experience the grace, favor, power and mercy of God victoriously moving on our lives as a result of our faith in Him.

“Hope in the LORD from now on and forever..”  Psalm 131:3

In His Own Words:     “… got a gun threat today at Home Depot for speaking bad of Obama

I have always seen in the news or heard of white dems being violent toward opposition as in the acts of kkk, union thugs & other white dems hitting repubs or knocking prolife signs out of Repub hands ! However I met the first heard of Political violent BLACK democrat today at Home Depot in Dallas ,tx ! I told a white & black worker at contractor register counter, that i have friendly debates with sometimes, that i will tell them another day when no customers around why they should not have voted for Obama. They laughed like normal saying” ok bring it on !” Then as i walked off, a black customer heard my low voice & loudly said ” i heard that & i have a gun in the truck i will use on you if you tell them while i am here” I then asked are a Christian ? He said “yes but i know u are not a Christian cause u speak against Obama !” I Then said “i am sure you would not shoot me, if i talked against Jesus Christ but u willing to shoot me for talking about Obama shows everybody listening to us who you really worship your Obama god & would you like me to tell that policeman at the other end of store that u threatened my life ?” He stayed silent as a mouse while many black & white customers clapped & laughed at him looking like a 100% fool ! Then he stormed out of the store & my cashier friend said u forgot your $20 ??? change; he YELLED back ” i got to come back Friday anyway i will get it then !”

Wow…!

I imagine that Christ wished we had a tiny bit of that passion for Him, His ways and His word!

And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them”  Psalm 106:36

“The LORD shall send upon thee cursing, vexation, and rebuke, in all that thou settest thine hand unto for to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the wickedness of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken Me.” Deuteronomy 28:20

I think that sometimes we continue in a way that we are not aware of as being sin. However, by the grace of God, one day He causes us to consider our ways. Then He removes the veil from our eyes…and behold, we discover that we have sinned. Believe me I’ve been there (Thank God for His grace!)! We must examine ourselves.

Idolatry comes in all forms. Consider your ways… Is there something or someone you are more passionate about then Jesus Christ (and His word) who was so passionate about His love for us that He died a violent and humiliating death for our redemption? If so, I have no doubt that God is not pleased about that. But, “if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).”

“Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry” 1 Corinthians 10:14
